In any case, you'll need to be a bit of an audiophile to tell any difference compared to lossless files like the 1000+ kbps FLACs you'd get from the sites mentioned elsewhere in these comments. (I believe Spotify runs at a constant bit rate of 320 kbps, so a slight improvement there, but you have to pay for the service monthly to listen offline, and you can't do anything else with the files outside the application). It's M4A AAC files that average 256 kbps in bitrate quality but are variable bitrate, so there's a decent bit of compression, but fairly intelligent compression.

(I have all the public releases from iTunes.)
TWO STEPS FROM HELL CD AMAZON INSTALL
I think you have to install iTunes in order to download the files you purchase, but once you download them, they'll work anywhere without restrictions. I'm also not sure if their quality is any better than Amazon or Google Play. I am weary of iTunes as I have not yet verified that it works well on non-Apple devices, and it has had DRM in the past. It is also known as "Digital Rights Management", and I heavily oppose it for moral reasons. This concentrates control over production and distribution of media, giving DRM peddlers the power to carry out massive digital book burnings and conduct large scale surveillance over people's media viewing habits. In other words, DRM creates a damaged good it prevents you from doing what would be possible without it. When a program is designed to prevent you from copying or sharing a song, reading an ebook on another device, or playing a single-player game without an Internet connection, you are being restricted by DRM. Digital Restrictions Management is the practice of imposing technological restrictions that control what users can do with digital media.
